The South East boasts some of the most beautiful gardens in the country, along with historic houses, rolling hills, a fabulous coastline and a large smattering of interesting towns. There are walks-a-plenty through some of the most wooded countryside in England, exploring ancient forests and abundant wildlife, and river tours and steam railways which meander nostalgically through the countryside. The coast offers beach resorts by the bucket (and spade)-load, with the traditional Kentish seaside towns, ‘Sussex by the Sea’ resorts, Hampshire fishing villages and the larger attractions of vibrant, bohemian Brighton.

The region has been been the site of numerous invasions and key moments in British history. Picturesque towns reflect the richness of this history, such as Lewes, Arundel and Chichester with their castles, medieval ruins and fine architecture. The university town of Oxford offers abundant historical treats and beautiful architecture, while Dover, Portsmouth and Southampton provide fascinating insights into British naval and military history.

There are major festivals, a huge range of museums, open-air concerts & opera, candlelit recitals, Shakespeare in the park and many popular theatres. Sports lovers are also spoilt for choice: international tennis at Eastbourne, bowls at Worthing, racing at Newbury and Epsom, sailing and water-sports, polo at Cowdray, golf courses galore and motorsport at Goodwood and Brands Hatch.
